Charlestown, Nevis - Against the backdrop of the 25th Anniversary of the Federation’s Independence, the TDC (Nevis) Limited continued to played its part in the advancement of Tennis on Nevis.
The Stoney Grove Tennis Court was the official venue for the TDC Silver Jubilee Tennis Doubles Tournament that started on Saturday 27th September 2008, and climaxed on Wednesday 1st October 2008.
Taking to the “Courts” were a wide cross-section of young and veteran players who displayed their athletic skills in a series of matches that brought the small and appreciative crowd to their feet on numerous occasions.
The finals saw an interesting showdown between Lewis Newton and Junior Seabrookes who played Andre Theron and Ernie France, Managing Director, of TDC (Nevis) Limited.
In the thrilling encounter, France and Theron won the first set, six (6) games to two (2). Nonetheless, Seabrookes and Newton rallied superbly in the second set and set up what would have been a long night, going up four (4) games to one (1).
After a break, Theron and France, regrouped, changed their strategy and showcased some of the most outstanding moves across the night lights, that included sharp volleys and fast aces. The dynamic duo tied the second set four (4) games all and won six (6) games to four (4) and collected the coveted Championship Trophies.
Ms. Keesha Jones, Manager of the St. Kitts and Nevis Finance Company (FINCO) presented the trophies to the Winners (Theron and France) and Runners Up (Seabrookes and Newton) who spoke of TDC’s commitment to Sports.
“As a Corporate citizen, TDC recognizes the importance of Sports and in particular this evening’s tournament. I am extremely happy to present the winning trophies on behalf of the Company to the Runners Up and the Winners, Mr. Theron and our very own, Ernie France”, stated an elated Jones.
In accepting his accolade, France quipped, “it was not a set up” to which the crowd responded in a burst of laughter. He also highly praised the efforts of his partner who he indicated was the real tennis professional and said that he merely played a supporting role.
Theron also commended France and said, “We made a great team because France was aggressive and good on the front line while he was good at the back.”
Mr. Anthony Webbe, Event Organizer, remarked, “that more tournaments will be organized in the future and hoped that TDC will come on board to once again demonstrate its support for the Tennis at the local level.”
