With the many changes in the social, cultural, political, environmental, and economic environment, both within and outside the Federation, it has become necessary for many Secondary Schools to implement initiatives by which students can relate to and understand how these changes involve or influence them.
Accordingly, several initiatives have been organized to get the views and opinions of a wide cross-section of the student population, relating to a number of issues that affect them, both directly and indirectly. These include elocution contests, inter-school debates, poetry, drama, and essay competitions, just to name a few.
These academically-based activities have proven to be some of the most effective mechanisms for student involvement, which aid in broadening participants’ knowledge of local, regional, as well as, global developments.
In 2005, the TDC Group of Companies, local agents for Harris Paints (Dominica) Limited, introduced an essay competition at the secondary level that give Secondary school students an avenue to voice their opinions on paper, as well as, register their concerns on issues that affect Youth, the Federation, the region or the world at large.
Through this literary project students are encouraged students to read and stimulate critical thinking, develop creative and expressive writing skills, enhance basic academic skills in research and language arts, provide an opportunity to respond to issues that affect Youth, the Nation, Region, and the world at large.
This venture continues to give TDC and Harris Paints (Dominica) Limited, an opportunity to further demonstrate their commitment to educational advancement within the Federation, and create further awareness of brand names, i.e., Harris Paints (Dominica) and TDC in the local market.
